HOME FOR HOMELESS: A DREAM PROJECT FOR SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
Building safe and affordable houses to the homeless to achieve the SDG No: 11- sustainable cities and communities, of UNDP is a magnificent step in uplifting the marginalized sections of the Indian society.
The project "Home for homeless" aims at constructing and providing homes for the neediest, especially widows with children and patients considering whether the houses were plastic shed or name shake habitats. About 850 individuals were benefited from the project and touched the figure of 250 houses by June 2022. The programme extended its support to people with malignant diseases. While constructing houses, she received financial help from individuals. The entire work is executed by Dr. M S Sunil & Mr. K P Jayalal by arranging and monitoring the construction work.
Dr. M S Sunil engaged in the society for the last one decade with various charity programmes [building homes, tribal development programmes, educational support programmes, wheel chair distribution, food kit distribution, women empowerment and awareness programmes etc. Dr. M S Sunil sets a strong message to the society by making livable homes with necessary requirement in low cost. Needless to say, the life style of the people who received homes changed for better. She continued the follow up system by providing study materials to the children and taking initiative to sponsor the children for their higher education. Dr. M S Sunil is highly vigilant to channelize the help to the real beneficiaries by directly assessing the genuineness of the clients, irrespective of their caste, creed and politics.
The houses are made with minimum resources and of affordable cost. The initiators consciously avoid pollutants and focuses on ecological conservation while constructing houses. To reduce pollution, high quality reusable trees are used and concrete roofing are replaced with GI coated roofing sheets. GI sheets are carefully selected to reduce the temperature and increase air circulation inside the house (houses consist of 7 ventilations for air circulation). The climatic condition of Southern parts of Kerala is unpleasant for concrete Roofing as it intensify the temperature. The project concentrates to not encourage river mining, thus uses quarry dust for manufacturing purposes, and the use of building blocks further limits the exploitation of nature. The construction is planned to complete in minimum 20 days or extends to one month; this achievement brightens the hope of the beneficiaries and helps to instill people with confidence, support students to facilitate in education sectors. Beneficiaries are chosen irrespective of age, religion, gender or politics; try to help people with disability, widows/ separated and children, old age, cancer, TB, Blinds and HIV etc.

Dr. M.S. Sunil has given special importance for smokeless ovens in kitchen rather than traditional, LPG stoves or induction ovens in “Home for Homeless” projects, to promote and spread awareness about Energy Conservation.
Rainwater Harvesting Systems are installed in 51 houses under “Jeevamritham” project to help those who lack any type of water resources or accessibility.
To make people self- sustainable and lead an eco-friendly life, Agriculture is introduced. To inspire the beneficiaries, seeds, vegetable saplings, grow bags are provided; promotes organic farming to make them acknowledge about the Health Issues by using edibles containing insecticides, pesticides and preservatives.
Fish tanks, fishes and aquatic plants to children are provided in “Home for Homeless” project. This project aims to relieve the students of their stress and also serves as a source of income to aid their education, especially during the Lockdown Period.
The "Home for Homeless" project focuses not only on constructing houses for needy, but is an ecological project that aims in creating an environment that is aware of ecological challenges faced by human beings. Under the project, seminars on energy conservation health issues on using edibles grown with chemical fertilizers, etc. are conducted. This project tries to increase the quality and quantity of education, food kits are distributed, extended medical support, reducing inequality, and many other programmes are produced to help people to acknowledge the relationship between Human and Nature.
